4 tips for managing your emotions intelligently

Managing your emotions intelligently means channeling  them and maintaining a certain balance. If you can do that, it will be positive both for you and for those around you. You will avoid having your emotions control your life.

When your emotions are in balance, you are more productive, more creative and happier. You prevent what you feel from taking over who you are. In other words, it is a way to  make your feelings constructive  and work for you, not against you.

Then you will be able to set goals and achieve them. You will be better equipped to have healthy relationships and offer the best of yourself. All that is required is determination and perseverance. Here are four tips to help you manage your emotions intelligently.

Emotions exist for a reason. Therefore, it is wrong to classify them as good or bad. Instead, it is about certain stimuli that lead to certain emotions. It is inevitable.

Balls with emotions

Fear, for example, is a response to threats. If we did not experience it, we would more easily fall into careless, life-threatening behaviors. Anger is also a form of defense, in order to prepare us for an attack.

Therefore, there are no bad feelings. To learn to deal with emotions, it is important to know how to interpret what they all say. They ‘re trying to tell you something  you need to get to grips with.

Traditional education and upbringing  almost never teaches how to deal with one’s emotions. Instead, they convince you that there are feelings you should not experience. They say, for example, that crying and fear do not solve anything and should therefore be suppressed.

But emotions are not born spontaneously, nor do they disappear spontaneously. To suppress what you feel is therefore not to manage your emotions intelligently. Trying to stifle what you feel will only delay its expression,  and perhaps in a negative way.

We must therefore understand that all emotions are valid  and have the right to both exist and be expressed. If you accept what you feel, it will be much easier to manage your emotions intelligently. Not accepting them will create confusion and chaos inside you.

The best way to deal with your emotions is to accept them, but also to understand them. To do that  , you need to learn how to observe them well. Just paying attention to them is a big step towards handling them properly.

A woman's gaze

Daniel Goleman – the renowned theorist on emotional intelligence – says that  “attention regulates emotion”. This means that when you focus on something you feel, this subjective experience will automatically be modulated or nuanced.

To observe your feelings, just ask: what do I feel? How do I feel? Then try to put an exact name on this feeling. Is it anger or is it frustration? Is it sadness or fatigue? The more accurate the identification, the easier the feeling will be to understand.

Contrary to many people’s  beliefs, many of your thoughts arise mechanically. They are interpretations of reality that sometimes have an actual basis, but sometimes not. Sometimes they are the result of logical thinking, but often this is not the case.

Thought is not reality, but a filter of reality. It makes us feel a certain way when certain things happen, and it can lead to us making mistakes. Thinking, for example, can convince us that something is difficult. But it can also tell us that it is a challenge, an opportunity. But this only happens if you dare to question your own ideas and not let yourself be swept away by them.

Relaxed woman

Learning to manage your emotions intelligently means you need to be alert. This means that you must be observant of what is going on inside you. It may be difficult at first, but the benefits are so great that it  is well worth the effort.
